Name: Soren
Canon: Fire Emblem Tellius (aka Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn)
Canon Point: Immediately following the final battle
Age: ~20, but looks younger
Gender: Male
Species: Branded (half beorc, half black dragon laguz)
Appearance: Here
History/Background: Path of Radiance, Radiant Dawn, Soren
Personality: Upon first encountering Soren, two things are made apparent very quickly. One is that he's not the friendliest of people around. He's very cold to people he doesn't know, which causes Titania and Ike to apologize to others on his behalf because of it. The other thing is that Soren is incredibly blunt. He does not mince words as he sees no point in "sugarcoating" them. He's even said as much after saying something true, though rude, about Begnion's views of Crimea. No, as far as first impressions go, Soren lacks very much in giving a good one, and acts as though he doesn't care how offended people can be about it.
Despite his bluntness, he does know tact and can be a fairly smooth talker. Fairly. Soren just chooses to not use it very often. The one time he has, it's to get something from Aimee, a merchant who constantly flirts with Ike whenever they cross paths. He's also somewhat over-the-top with it, most certainly on purpose. There's also a wicked sense of humor buried underneath his sarcasm. Soren has taken more than a little amusement at Aimee's antics with "Ikey-poo," even lightly teasing his best friend about it. Seriously, he totally sells Ike out when Aimee tells him she has an extremely rare staff she wants to give to Ike. He tells her that spicy meat dishes are the better way to get to Ike's heart and gets that staff out of the ordeal. Who says he doesn't have a good laugh at the expense of even his best friend?
Getting to the point where this guy does consider someone a friend is a very difficult matter, though. Soren doesn't trust very easily. His skills in friend-making are abysmal, which is why he only has two Supports in Path of Radiance. His past experience with other people as a child are what lead him to distrust people immediately. He's seen the cruelty of beorc and laguz firsthand. People who will turn a blind eye to a child in need or will run him off just because he's different. Because of this, it's hard for him to trust someone right from the first meeting. It takes a lot of time and patience to get anywhere with Soren, especially for laguz. Skrimir is perhaps the only laguz who has made any sort of progress with him, though Ranulf can be considered a runner-up just on account of having fought in the same company as Soren for months.
However, on the one hand, that time and patience can pay off. Once Soren makes a friend, it's for life. His faith and loyalty are unshakable. The best example is that, when Ike is made commander of the mercenary company at a younger age than expected, Soren stoutly remains at Ike's side. He doesn't care that he might die because their commander doesn't have much experience. All he cares about is helping his friend if and when he can, promising to do all he can to help make the results Ike wants come to fruition.
While Soren doesn't talk much, and usually is pretty curt with anyone not Ike, there is no question among those who know him that he's a tactical genius. More than one person has commented on how creative his tactics can be, such as combining the skills of the hawks and cats to make a surprise appearance on the battlefield against Begnion. He has the hawks ferry the cats across the battlefield to behind the enemy lines to divert the Begnion Army's attention so that the bulk of their forces can escape. Soren is just good at predicting the movements of other people, such as when he suggests that they attack the Senators' camp because it will force the army to retreat to defend them no matter how disastrous such a move would be. If it doesn't go according to plan, he'll get annoyed, but at the same time he has the presence of mind to think of another solution to the problem presented to him. Planning and tactics are his definite strengths, and in some cases can make people forgive him for being so taciturn.
At the same time, he can be surprisingly easy to hurt in some ways. He's not so cold that he doesn't take some words to heart. For example, when Nasir calls him out on his rudeness, as well as Ike, Soren takes the admonishments somewhat hard. Comments like this stick with him for a long time, making him worry about them.
Soren harbors a lot of hatred toward the laguz. He lashes out at Mordecai and Lethe, as an example, and provokes them into attacking him. He takes Lethe's words about the beorc as nothing but conceit and pride. Soren is also one of two people who immediately refuses to help escort Elincia to Gallia, but only goes along because the Dein army attacks anyway and Greil says they need to go. In the beginning, he sometimes slips and calls them "sub-human," a very racist slur among the two races (and, on the laguz side, "human" is seen as just as bad a slur). While Soren does call them laguz, it's only because Ike has asked him to and not out of real respect for them. He has his reasons, of course, as while he'd been in Gallia, the Beast Tribe refused to acknowledge his existence, even though he'd been a child on the verge of dying from starvation. He's very bitter toward them, and the wounds he has from them will take a long time to heal. This doesn't excuse his behavior at all, but he does have reasons.
Even worse is when he discovers that he himself is one of the Branded. The Branded are those people who, somewhere in their family tree, had a beorc and laguz coupling, and it's not always the child immediately born from their coupling. Branded can crop up at any point in the family line, and Soren isn't sure who in his family history is the reason for his being part of them. He does, however, suspect that his Branding is the reason why he's abandoned into the care of a horrible old hag instead of being raised by his birth parents. He becomes very unsure of himself because of this, and far more inclined to shut away the rest of the world. After reading text in Begnion that describe how the Branded are an abomination and against the teachings of the Goddess in Tellius, he just seriously starts to wonder about his heritage. Even among the laguz, the Branded are called "the Parentless" because to them, the children of such a coupling shouldn't even exist. It gets to a point where Soren is distracted from his task, such as formulating a strategy to deal with some bandits in the desert. He even has a hard time talking to Ike, feeling like he's...unclean and not fit to so much as eat beside the one person he calls a friend. Soren goes to great lengths to keep his heritage a secret from the rest of the Greil Mercenaries, but he knows that there will come a time where they'll find out by virtue of his aging being slowed to a crawl. He has no love for the mark on his forehead that designates him as one of the Branded, though he'll willingly pass himself off as a Spirit Charmer if beorc are so inclined to think of him as one, since Spirit Charmers have a similar mark upon their person.
Still, after the events of Path of Radiance, Soren has relaxed somewhat. He doesn't stay in his own little world, as Ranulf puts it, as often any longer. He humors Skrimir's questions, even the ones that are so stupid they shouldn't even deserve an answer. This is honestly a very big step in the right direction for him. Though he doesn't trust the laguz much, he's also now more willing to talk to them mostly civilly. Mostly. Soren still doesn't hesitate to be rude to Skrimir, who is essentially a prince in Gallia. His start to peace with the laguz is also in part due to his being more "settled" with being half-laguz himself. Ever since telling Ike about his heritage, though, he's been more comfortable with it, even if it means that the longer he stays with the company, the faster they'll find out about his secret.
His most important relationship is with Ike by far. Ike is his only friend in the whole series because he's the only one who treats Soren with any genuine kindness when they were children. He's the reason why Soren leaves Gallia, goes to a church to learn how to speak, and then try to find him in Crimea some time later. Heck, Ike and his father, Greil, hire him when he arrives on their doorstep. Soren owes a lot to those two, and as such they have earned his loyalty to the end of their days. His relationship with Greil is essentially the same, though with a touch less devotion. Soren can also be protective of Ike, threatening Nasir once should he try anything to hinder or hurt the commander.
Titania deserves a mention because she's also someone who understands him at least a little. She's known him as long as Greil has, after all. Though not as close to her as Ike, Titania is essentially his foil when it comes to advice giving. She gives the more emotional answers while Soren gives out the logical and practical ones. They complement each other in this way. Though the two sometimes can get into heated arguments because Soren does raise good points she can't ignore, the two also share respect for each other.
Stefan is also someone deserving a mention due to a special relationship with Soren. Stefan is also one of the Branded, the first Soren ever encounters, and offers him to come live in the Branded colony. To live among his own kind without fear of abuse or relocating once the beorc start catching on that he's very different. Soren reveals to Stefan that three years previous to the events of Path of Radiance, he has noticed a slowing of his aging. Indeed, if he gains A-Rank Support with Stefan, Soren will leave the Greil Mercenaries to live with the Branded after the Mad King's War is over. This speaks much of how he fears rejection from the one place that has taken him in without question, the only home he has, and the fear of losing Ike as a friend because of the circumstances of his birth.
Skills/Abilities: Magic is cast through the use of tomes. Weapons have a limited number of uses, however Yune has given her blessing to make only one of Soren’s tomes have an unlimited amount. He is also able to wield healing staves. Soren is not limited to wind magic, but he specializes in this type of anima magic. It is important to note that in Radiant Dawn, wind magic is the most powerful of the anima, and thunder magic is the least powerful. The triangle for anima magic is wind beats thunder, thunder beats fire, and fire beats wind. This triangle just weakens the magic against a certain type, and increases the chances of landing a hit. Also, it needs to be noted that wind magic gains more power against flying enemies, thunder is effective against dragons and wyverns, and fire is powerful against beasts. The tomes allow communication between the mage and the spirits of whatever elemental magic they're using. Poor communication will result in unpredictable and often fatal results.
The last ability inherent in a mage is that when in a desert or other terrain that hinders movement, a mage will "ignore" the hindrance. This is explained in canon as the spirits of the elements showing the mage where to step, guiding them through it.
Flare: If lucky, it will nullify magical resistance, and heal him equal to the amount of damage given.
Shade: Decreases the chance of an enemy attacking Soren if there is another available target.
As one of the Branded, Soren has a very long life and ages much more slowly than beorc (humans) do. Due to his heritage as being part black dragon, he's practically immortal as far as longevity goes. This heritage is also why he's a very powerful magic user.
Magic Weapon: I would like to randomize this, please!
Carrier: Fairy Dragon - She's small, she's cute, and she knows it! She won't hesitate to fly up to someone and use her cute appearance to beg a tasty treat from them. This little fairy dragon is both curious and, unlike her Hero, gregarious. She'll investigate anything that catches her interest.
